The BYD Atto 8 serves as BYD's flagship global strategic model, positioned as an executive D-segment luxury seven-seater plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV. Known domestically in China as the "Tang L", it has been rolled out across several international markets under the "BYD Atto 8" nameplate in 2025. Powered by BYD's 5th-generation DM super hybrid technology, a flagship platform, and state-of-the-art tech, its primary objective is to take on mainstream ICE rivals like the Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Santa Fe, whilst directly rivalling D-segment SUVs from legacy premium marques. Dimension-wise, it measures 5,040 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,760 mm in height, with a 2,950 mm wheelbase.
The Atto 8 showcases BYD's latest "Loong Face" design language, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese heritage. Up front, sleek yet muscular "dragon whisker" contours pair with sharp "dragon eye" headlights, while the rear features signature "dragon claw" full-width LED taillights and woven bamboo-textured light clusters, seamlessly blending cultural motifs with modern sophistication. The side profile remains clean and understated, with flush pop-out door handles and large alloy wheels accentuating its commanding flagship presence. Inside, the cabin adopts a clean, tiered architecture characterised by clean dashboard lines, plush soft-touch materials, bamboo-wood trims, and crystal accents, creating a luxurious ambiance that bridges oriental artistry with modern tech.
The Atto 8 range is powered by BYD's 5th-generation DM super hybrid powertrain, available in DM-i and DM-p variants. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) DM-i variant pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor to produce a combined output of 205 kW, completing the 0-100 km/h century sprint in 8.6 seconds; meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) DM-p variant employs the same 1.5-litre turbo engine alongside dual front and rear motors—adding a 200 kW motor to the rear axle for an electric AWD setup—delivering a combined 359 kW (481 hp) and achieving 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. For battery specs, the DM-i carries a 19.0 kWh battery pack delivering 75 km of pure EV range; the DM-p packs a 35.6 kWh battery pack providing up to 130 km of pure electric range, a maximum combined driving range of up to 1,030 km on a full tank and charge, and a depleted-battery fuel consumption of just 7.15 L/100 km.
To ensure a fine balance of handling dynamics and ride comfort, the Atto 8 sits on a high-spec chassis comprising a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. Higher-spec DM-p variants feature the DiSus-C intelligent electronically controlled active suspension system, which adjusts damping stiffness on the fly based on road surfaces and drive modes, effectively mitigating body roll and pitch to ensure a composed, refined ride over uneven surfaces. Furthermore, the intelligent electric AWD system actively distributes torque between the front and rear axles, boosting driver confidence across wet, unpaved, and tricky terrains.
The Atto 8 features a driver-centric, tech-laden cabin designed for premium comfort. The front cockpit adopts a wraparound layout, equipped as standard with a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch floating rotating touchscreen running the DiLink 150 infotainment suite. Range-topping trims add a 26-inch Head-Up Display (HUD) system. Upholstery comes in either premium synthetic leather or supple Nappa leather, with second-row seats across the lineup featuring power adjustment, heating, ventilation, memory settings, and massage functions (on the DM-p variant). Audiophiles are treated to a DiSound premium audio system with 10 to 21 speakers, complemented by multi-colour ambient lighting for an immersive experience. Dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and acoustic double-glazed glass also come standard across the range.
Safety remains paramount in the Atto 8, coming standard with 11 airbags—covering front driver and passenger, front and rear side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags spanning all three rows. Built on a high-strength cage structure combined with Cell-to-Body (CTB) structural battery integration, it offers superior torsional rigidity and crash safety. On the active safety front, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) come standard across the range, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Lane Keep Assist (LKA). The flagship trim steps up to the God’s Eye DiPilot 300 suite with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, providing comprehensive, carpark-to-carpark semi-autonomous driving capability.
As a flagship global model, the BYD Atto 8 has demonstrated formidable market competitiveness worldwide, with overseas demand notably surpassing its domestic run under the "Tang L" badge. Positioned upmarket internationally, the model starts in South Africa at 1,059,900 South African Rand (approx. RM403,000) for the Premium trim and 1,259,900 South African Rand for the DM-p trim. In the UAE, prices start from 159,900 Dirhams, while in Chile, it starts from 43,990,000 Chilean Pesos. The Atto 8's global success underlines its "technology-first" ethos, seamlessly blending cutting-edge DM-i hybrid efficiency, executive comfort, and class-leading safety to carve out a commanding presence in the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) SUV segment.
